Often it is not the talent of the author that makes the difference. Certainly that is a major factor. However, in many instances it is a combination of factors, starting with the sheer volume of books published each year.<\/p>\n<p>One report after another indicates that the\u00a0publishing industry is in flux. The number of print books are going down each year while eBooks are becoming more in demand. <a title=\"ebooks, nonfiction books, publishing industry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=nonfiction%20book%20publishing&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=rwlnfw-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks\">Nonfiction books<\/a> typically sell fewer copies than<a title=\"ebooks, nonfiction books, publishing industry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=nonfiction%20book%20publishing&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=rwlnfw-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks#\/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&amp;field-keywords=fiction+book+publishing&amp;rh=n%3A283155%2Ck%3Afiction+book+publishing\"> fiction books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I do not want to discourage you as an author, but to get a sense of what you are up against throughout the world, take a look at the figures related to how many books are published yearly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/books\/\">http:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/books\/<\/a>.\u00a0 Some of these numbers are dated, but the trends are typical from year-to-year. \u00a0Granted not all those books are direct competitors for yours.\u00a0However, even\u00a0if you only plan to sell in the United States,\u00a0there were almost 28,000 books\u00a0published monthly in 2010, according to the UNESCO survey on the website above. In addition to numbers of books published,\u00a0you\u00a0also have to consider how many are in your genre and format (print versions or eBooks).<\/p>\n<p>The key to making your book stand out from the competition is to decide the following things before you ever write it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is your topic?<\/li>\n<li>Who is your target audience?<\/li>\n<li>In what format (s) will the book appear (<a title=\"ebooks, nonfiction books, publishing industry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.robertwlucas.com\/wordpress\/?s=ebooks\">eBook<\/a>, print, electronic, combination)?<\/li>\n<li>Will you use traditional or <a title=\"ebooks, nonfiction books, publishing industry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.robertwlucas.com\/wordpress\/?s=self+publishing\">self publishing<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>What other competing books are already in publication?<\/li>\n<li>What is your <a title=\"ebooks, nonfiction books, publishing industry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.robertwlucas.com\/wordpress\/?s=author+platform\">author platform<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>How will you <a title=\"ebooks, nonfiction books, publishing industry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.robertwlucas.com\/wordpress\/?s=book+marketing\">market the book<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>How will the book be distributed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The answers to these and a number of other questions will ultimately impact your how well your book sells. That is because being an author is a business. Like any business, you need a plan and should not enter into it without giving thorough thought to all aspects of the writing and publication process.
